Boker Production Nopal Compact Folder - Highly Recommended
If you ask Mr. Martin about Boker's production version of his Nopal design, He'll tell you that "It's one helluva tough little knife amigo. I'm impressed, they got it really close."
The hidden ingenuity of a knife genius.
The Boker Nopal is a knife made by a knife expert that knew the design was going to have limitations & compromises. So he built the knife with modular thinking. This means since all the torque screws are made of lesser grade stainless steel he made all of them the same size including the pocket clip ones except for the pivot. So in the event one screw may strip the owner has an extra two. On top of this all torque screws when they strip move one size up before becoming completely unusable. Secondly the stop pin is the same piece as the spacers so you can alternate them if the stop pin should wear out. Thirdly the final spacer & set of screws at the butt of the handle are not necessary for the knife to function (if you look at pics of the real version) & so can be used as extra pieces. Fourth the spacers are nestled into the stainless steel liners so not all spacers require a screw in order to be functional. Fifthly the lanyard hole can fit a Chris Reeve Lanyard Pin thus adding to the rigidity of the handle & aiding in the manipulation of the knife. Lastly the pivot is notched so that it does not rotate thus preventing uneven wearing & also removing the need for lockitite.
*The thumb lug can also be removed to make the knife legal to carry in countries that allow two hand operating knives only & also create a lanyard hole if necessary
440c steel isnt' impact resistant with only a 8-9lbs charpy rating. The steel is primarily focused on being stainless with decent edge retention while not having much alloys in it. The steel isn't air tight nor does it have any special process to make a finer grain structure but is still a pleasant steel to use.

Things to consider for buyers.
-The screws are an average steel & not hardened so maintaining the knife must be done with care to preserve the knife over time. Do not try to harden them as the steel grade will break down.Avoid completely screwing down each screw which will help prevent stripping.
-The liner lock bar is not smoothed due to manufacturing limitations so it will tear at your finger when disengaging the lock so we suggest you smooth it off -The chisel ground blade provides a stronger blade shape that can withstand heavy use but will need to be sharpened regularly in order to cut -The Nopal won't cut your finger if the lock disengages -The knife can disengage if the blade is struckor you stab hard *Any knife claiming made for hard use should not cut you if the lock disengages this one won't |
