What makes the best fixed blade?
When considering a fixed blade many experts will say that the toughness of carbon steel is the preferred choice for outdoor use. For larger knives the weight & heft aid in chopping but at the more minimalist level weight is not necessary & is actually a burden. The next aspect is maintenance. Normal outdoor knives don't withstand nature well & quickly succumb to nature & it's elements & require maintenance to prevent rusting. What makes a Warren Thomas knife the best outdoor knife? Lightweight, zero maintenance & a knife that won't ever lose it's toothy edge. Think of the knife as a fixed blade version of a Swiss Army Pocket Knife saw blade. Most outdoor work can be done by picking up branches & finding resources. When time come for a knife usually it's for notching which is good when your knife can saw directly straight into the wood. Also skinning & food preparation which this knife was built for since it is a shallow chisel that's almost a zero cutting edge angle but there is a secondary bevel (which could be lowered or convexed if you wanted more slicing capabilities but this would depend on the uses since the blade edge is Ti which will roll more easily) |

How does a Tungsten Carbide Edge cut
Tunsten carbide can be found on industrial mining tools & is in the top of the scale for hardness & toughness. The tungsten carbides are like large grains & do not completely blend into the titanium cutting edge so there is always a distinction when cutting that can be likened to using a serrated blade.
The titanium is soft enough to attain a shaving edge but under hard use will give & reveal the Tungsten Carbides thus making the knife have a saw like edge that will last for longer than any traditional steel. The best way to compare it to is using a serrated blade but the difference is a clean edge is still possible & sharpening is done in a traditional plain edge manner. |
