Noteworthy Features
+ Includes free RCR123 rechargeable battery with built in charger for the light. No more need for a home charging kit!
+ Constant brightness means you get max output till battery depletes. No step brightness or a slow decrease in output unlike competitors such as Fenix.True output is not 550 lumen but it's closer to 500 lumens but it's stable which makes it more superior. + 5 degree hotspot with 40 degree spill means good throw in adverse weather & wide spill means convenient when searching through small spaces. Most flashlights in this class have wider spills and poor throw. + Fast tactical click button allows for manual strobing effect, again a feature not seen in other competitors. + Stand up tail cap for using the light as a lamp in a room |
5 Point Review of the Nitecore Mh1C Flashlight
|
CONCEPT
Create an EDC flashlight with a built in charger to not only add value in terms of getting a light and charger for your batteries, but also creating a real incentive to use the flashlight freely and keep it on your person at all times because it can be charged at home or in your car. Designed for real use in ranges from 5-35 feet this light has one of the best beam angles in the market for it's size. PERFORMANCE
The MH1C has a larger head to body ratio which may seem disproportionate but it's because the reflector is designed to give you the best of both utility and tactical beam pattern. The wide spill is 40 degrees (very convenient for EDC tasks), but the hotspot is a narrow 5 degrees which gives the flashlight better reach and blinding power compared to competitors like Fenix. The OTF (true output) is more close to 490 Lumens based on personal testing* but since the technology is a CONSTANT BRIGHTNESS it is always that output till the battery depletes. The reality is a long throw is more helpful when paired with high output but the MH1C's focused hotspot makes it more usable at night in foggy conditions & is more useful than more powerful lights that disperse the light too close. The beam angle and drain pattern are two of the best features on this light that beat the competition. |
CONSTRUCTION/DESIGN
The IPX-8 Waterproof rating is not valid based on personal testing*. The silicone O-Rings are not thick enough and some junctures are not engineered properly. If the flashlight is subjected to lots of water, water will seep into the charging port, the main body & if left unattended to will form rust primarily on the battery. Watch the video showing an easy solution to this issue. Astonishingly, the light is constructed in a way that is usually seen only on higher end flashlights that cost nearly 3 times as much and that is the flashlight can be operated even if submerged and water has gotten into the frame. If the battery is inserted backwards their is circuit protection to prevent damage. The spring & contact points are made of a metal that won't form rust.
ROLE/ APPLICATIONS
Watch this video and you can see that the Nitecore MH1C is a flashlight that has no limitations in terms of the environment and situation. The light is small enough to carry clipped onto a hat, in your pocket or on a key chain. It has reliable technology that won't fail the only consideration is the USER must TAKE CARE to dry the internals if it gets submerged. Beyond this the slightly more aggressive crenelated bezel and focused beam angle make it a distraction when defending & the overall reach & beam pattern are perfect for every day usage. |
FINAL THOUGHTS
As a dealer but also an enthusiast, I did a lot of cross shopping and research to isolate the best light for this category. The MH1C is an extremely capable compact light. Because of the focused hotspot it's competitive with 2 cell lights like the Fenix PD35 simply because it doesn't step down in brightness as the battery depletes and has better throw. The output is not as high as the OTF 770 lumens (real world output) of the Viking or the <700 OTF lumens of the Fenix PD35 so it won't illuminate as much but it's consistent.
Secondly the light has a built in charger for RCR123 batteries so you can plug the USB cable into a cigarette adapter or any USB port which makes the light perfect for workplaces & employees to use while saving money.
