Spyderco Sage 2 Titanium Frame Lock Folder

Picture
The stop pin also serves as a spacer for the pivot.
The Sage 2 is built in recognition of Chris Reeve, the creator of the frame lock & modeled after his world famous Sebenza knife. The Sebenza among many things is specifically known for the special bushing that goes around the pivot screw in order to keep tension on the blade consistent & not require lockitite. Spyderco incorporated a simplified, cost saving alternative method of getting the same result which was to include a stop pin that also serves the same purpose as the bushing by being a spacer for the knife handles keeping them set apart at the proper distance for good tension when opening.

The power of the titanium frame lock.
Almost all knives that utilize titanium are made with 6AL4V grade which includes Aluminum. Not all titanium grades are equal but 6AL4V when annealed is at the top of the bunch & can bend 4.5-5x the thickness of the titanium lock bar cut out. The Sage handles are all titanium construction & measure at 3mm thick each side so the handle is nearly unbreakable which makes it highly resistant to impacts in the case of dropping the knife. The lock of this knife will never break (can still possibly disengage). Titanium is also 2.5x lighter than steel which makes the knife very unnoticeable for those who are backpacking &/or are concerned with weight. Titanium resists all corrosion so needs no maintenance. Frame lock designs also give the user the ability to control the lock more directly by applying pressure on the lock to keep the knife from unlocking.

Ergonomics = Safety & Versatility

Picture
Though the Sage is not intended for hard use it still includes a finger choil on the blade that prevents injury if the knife accidentally unlocks. The handle plates are smooth but the contour along the handles along with the large cutout pictured form with the hand to provide a solid grip. Multiple grip positions up to the blade choil make the Sage versatile for different types of cutting tasks all in one package.

Back to basics: low maintenance

Picture
One size fits all: the Sage design makes maintenance simple by having all three torque screws holding the knife together being of the same size, which means you only need 1 tool for maintenance. Titanium is resistant to almost all forms of corrosion & the rest of knife is stainless & can be disassembled one section at a time to help simplify care & upkeep. The open construction lends itself to outdoor use without becoming obstructed & is easily cleaned after.

Things to consider for owners

-Frame lock knives have a simple locking mechanism so therefore less parts & maintenance issues but the lock bar on this knife design can move further in when used or gripped hard thus causing it to wear quicker. The Sage is recommended for light to medium use.
-This knife is not recommended for tactical use (unless modified) because the cutout on the display side allows for the possibility of disengaging the lock when thrusting & also since the knife sits deep in the pocket there is no handle sticking out to help you to pull out the knife nor option for a lanyard Don't forget you can use skateboard tape to add traction!
-The finger hole (Spydey Hole) is not rounded off on the edges (Taiwan manufacturing compromise) so will wear the fingers unless smoothed (over time will happen naturally with use)
-Light weight, slim profile, multiple grip positions & open simple construction make the Sage a very accommodating & user friendly EDC capable for kitchen, outdoor, hiking, work, home use
- We feel the Sage 3 is superior in terms of safety & design but this version is much more accessible & less maintenance for those with those concerns especially for outdoor use & also because the pivot does not require any form of locktite or teflon tape to stay tightened beyond normal screw pressure.

Last thoughts on the Sage 2

Picture
The Sage 2 does everything a knife should do & even offers a bit of refinement & expensive engineering. Initially it gives off the impression of a simple knife concept but the execution is all done without any compromises to performance. Spyderco's redesign of the Sebenza is completely reliable & with the inclusion of Spyderco's trademark features in many ways surpasses its' precursor. With this knife you're paying for the quality craftmanship. Less maintenance than Sage 3 but Sage 3 is more tough & a little bigger in the hand so depends on hand size & use.
