//5p Review: Kershaw Emerson CQC 7K
//CONCEPT
// Introduced in 2014 are the new Emerson collaboration knives with Kershaw. The knives feature framelock, reversible pocket clip carry & affordable pricing for fans and users of Emerson knives. //PERFORMANCE
// Normal Emerson knives are primarily titanium liner locks while a few rare models are titanium frame locks. The CQC 7K features a stainless steel frame lock which offers good wear resistance along with security. A comparable knife is the Cold Steel Mini AK47 which is similarly priced along with having equivalent steel & a stronger locking mechanism. That knife also has a wave feature. In the end choosing this knife will be based upon appeal.
//FINAL IMPRESSIONS
// From a collector's standpoint, these knives merely represent an USA made product. These knives make good utility folders but in this price category there are many options for tactical EDC. One alternative is the Cold Steel Mini AK47, which offers rust preventive coating & slightly superior body hardware. But there's no denying the visual appeal of these Emerson collaboration knives. |
//CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN
//The knives are made in China featuring a stainless steel frame lock with 8Cr14MoV blade steel, and G10 handle scale. The lock up on average for each knife is 40-50% engagement, and the overall experience is positive. Little to no flex & no blade play. The pivots utilize Teflon* washers which help subside any inconsistencies in precision whilst maintaining tension to keep the blade from easily opening. The overall fit and finish is average to above average and even on
noticeable areas such as the back spacer any gaps are very minimal and hard to detect by eye and mostly cosmetic.
//ROLE & APPLICATIONS
// In a direct email from E. Emerson, he stated that stabbing with a folding knife is not wise. In similar regards a folding knife is not going to have priority in extreme combat situations. The main thing is this knife has no flipper guard, no safety choil in case the lock disengages & it has to be opened properly. In this regards the majority of folding tactical knives not just the CQC 7K are better suited for EDC use & work related tasks such as S&R or packing. The overall tanto blade shape was traditionally designed to excel at piercing through hard materials so this blade design will not serve well for outdoor purposes. |
