//5 Point Review: Spyderco Paramilitary 2
|
//CONCEPT
// One of the best selling and most popular knives made by Spyderco. The design is very comfortable, lightweight and easy to open or close intuitively. It has a full flat ground blade for very good cutting performance and accommodates end user adjustments to the edge angle because the steel is hardened higher to 60-61 HRC. //Featured Video 7 point review
//PERFORMANCE
// The compression lock allows for very quick deployment and closure of the blade and can be compared to the feel of a Benchmade Axis* lock. The blade with it's full flat grind makes it more convenient for people that want to change the edge cutting angle without destroying the overall look. Spyderco's S30v is fairly hard at 60-61 HRC so the knife's cutting edge can be made very shallow to really improve the slicing capabilities if an end user so desires. //ROLE & APPLICATIONS
// The Paramilitary 2 is designed more towards being used as a utility knife. The overall handle shape is more like a traditional bush craft knife meaning it's smoothly contoured for long periods of use without hurting & the handle gets more narrow towards the blade so the overall grip is not tailored to prevent your hand from slipping forward if you stab with it. Despite this, the blade has a sharp and aggressive point so it's very capable of piercing with ease so the choice is up to the person. As a utility knife the Paramilitary 2 is a fantastic choice primarily because of the way it's built but the reality is this is a knife with two stainless steel liners that need to be waxed and maintained occasionally if it's being used around liquids. Lastly the knife is completely ambidextrous and can be situated in a variety of ways (because of the 4 position options for the pocket clip) to suit any individual's preference. The easy deployment and closure make this knife a great EDC. |
//CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN
// The knife is still factory built mass production piece. So there can be slight variations in the centering of the blade, some slightly unclean spots & blade grinding. The pivot is a spacer that allows for a persons to adjust the tension and centering along with making the knife not require any type of lock tite to stay assembled. The compression lock used for this knife is one of the more cleanly designed & simple to maintenance locks, essentially very similar to a liner lock, but extremely durable and secure. More secure than frame locks or liner locks and comparable to Axis locks or the Tri Ad lock. Even when the blade pivot is loose it has no issues with keeping the blade securely locked and open. //Featured Videos Lock abuse testing
//FINAL IMPRESSIONS
// It's an older design that still focuses on function not flamboyance but time and again the overall simplicity is what will make this knife the one that's most practical to carry and use. One of the best folding knives ever made & a great representation of what Spyderco can make. |
